Six Feared Dead, Four Rescued in Lagos Boat Accident

At least six passengers have died, while four others were rescued after a boat accident along the Nigerdock section of the Igbologun water channel in Lagos State.

The incident occurred around 8:35 p.m. on Tuesday and involved a passenger boat operated by Savvy Marine, traveling from Ilashe Beach House.

Rescue and search operations are ongoing to locate any additional passengers.

The Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) and the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) confirmed the accident in a joint statement signed by NIWA’s Head of Public Affairs, Wuraola Alake, and LASWA’s Head of Corporate Affairs, Omowunmi Yussuff. Emergency response teams were immediately deployed following a distress call, working alongside the Marine Police and other first responders.

“Four passengers were rescued alive and taken to a nearby hospital for medical attention. Unfortunately, six passengers were recovered dead at the scene. Search and rescue efforts continue to account for all individuals involved,” the statement read.

Preliminary reports suggest the boat may have struck a submerged object, though investigations are ongoing to determine the exact cause.

LASWA and NIWA expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and reiterated their commitment to ensuring safety on Lagos waterways. The agencies also urged waterway users to follow safety regulations, including proper navigation practices and the “no night travel” policy.

Members of the public were advised to remain calm and rely only on verified information from official sources as investigations continue.
