A student of Rufus Giwa Polytechnic (RUGIPO), Ondo State, has been shot dead by suspected cultists in the Opomulero area of Owo. The victim, identified simply as Peter, was reportedly killed on Sunday, December 14, 2025.
A community source told Punch on Monday that the attackers invaded the area in the evening while searching for rival cult members. Peter was allegedly tracked to his residence, where he was shot at close range.
According to the source, the assailants disguised themselves as visitors, called Peter out of his apartment, and shot him. He reportedly struggled for his life before being rushed to the hospital, where he later died.
Another source disclosed that the deceased, popularly known as Don P, had lost his mother just three weeks before the incident and was still mourning her death.
An anti-cultism advocacy group, Naija Confra, revealed that the killing was linked to an ongoing clash between rival cult groups. The platform stated that the violence began last Thursday during a birthday celebration organized by members of the Eiye confraternity.
According to the group, the incident escalated after an Eiye leader allegedly ordered the assault of a female student, which led to a confrontation with members of the Buccaneers confraternity who were present. The disagreement later degenerated into a series of retaliatory attacks between the two groups.
Naija Confra claimed that the reprisals eventually resulted in the attack and killing of Peter, as tensions continued to rise between the rival cult factions.
