The Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, has assured Nigerians that electricity supply will be restored within the next 24 to 48 hours.
The reassurance follows a recent decline in power availability caused by a temporary reduction in electricity generation. Adelabu said steps are already being taken to stabilise the national grid and return supply to normal levels across the country.
The disruption was linked to an explosion on the Escravos–Lagos Gas Pipeline, worsened by vandalism of key gas facilities. The incidents interrupted gas supply to several thermal power plants, resulting in reduced electricity generation.
The minister’s statement comes in response to an update from the National Independent System Operator (NISO), which disclosed that it is closely overseeing repair works being carried out by the Nigerian Gas Processing and Transportation Company, a subsidiary of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited.
NISO confirmed that the pipeline explosion led to a significant drop in electricity generation nationwide, noting that several gas-fired power stations recorded reduced output. This, it said, caused a decline in available generation capacity on the national grid and a corresponding shortage in power supply to consumers.
