The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has announced a State of Emergency across the region in response to escalating security challenges.
The declaration was made by the President of the ECOWAS Commission, Omar Touray, during the 55th session of the Mediation and Security Council at the ministerial level, held in Abuja on Tuesday, December 9.
The emergency meeting was prompted by a series of coups and attempted mutinies within the sub-region.
Touray stressed that the recent events highlight “the urgent need for deep reflection on the future of our democracy and increased investment in the security of our community.”
