Islamic cleric Sheikh Gumi has said that although abducting schoolchildren is wrong, it is a “lesser evil” compared to taking the lives of soldiers. He argued that Nigeria must engage in dialogue with armed groups to prevent more severe violence.
In an interview with the BBC published on Tuesday, December 9, Gumi stated that while the kidnapping of minors is unacceptable, it does not carry the same weight as the killing of security personnel.
“Kidnapping children is a lesser evil than killing your soldiers. Killing is worse—though both are evil. Not all wrongs are equal,” he said.
He referenced past incidents, including mass abductions in Kebbi State, noting that victims in such cases were released unharmed.
“In Kebbi, they abducted children and later freed them. They were not killed,” he added.
