Russia Pounds Kyiv With Major Air Assault Ahead of Trump–Zelensky Talks

Russia has launched a large-scale overnight missile and drone offensive on Kyiv, leaving at least eight people injured in an escalation that came less than a day after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced plans to meet US President Donald Trump over a potential peace deal.

According to Ukrainian authorities, the strikes targeted residential neighbourhoods and key infrastructure, forcing residents to seek shelter as air defence systems were activated throughout the night.

The anticipated meeting between Zelensky and Trump is expected to hold in Florida and forms part of US-led efforts to bring an end to the nearly four-year-old conflict.

Ukrainian officials say a revised 20-point peace proposal is now about 90 per cent complete following weeks of consultations with Washington.

Zelensky has signalled openness to certain compromises, including possible flexibility on NATO membership and troop-related matters, while maintaining that Ukraine must receive strong, long-term security guarantees.

Beyond the immediate casualties, the ongoing war continues to deepen humanitarian and environmental crises. Repeated missile strikes have damaged homes, transport infrastructure, and energy facilities, driving up pollution levels, emissions, and the long-term cost of rebuilding.

The prolonged instability is also undermining climate resilience, food security, and regional cooperation across Eastern Europe.

As the Zelensky–Trump meeting approaches, diplomatic engagements are expected to intensify, with European leaders aligning their positions, although no European Union representatives are slated to attend the talks directly.

Ukrainian officials have warned that further international pressure on Moscow may be required if Russia rejects the proposed peace framework.
