Isiah Whitlock Jr., a respected character actor widely recognized for his roles in The Wire, Veep, Your Honor, The Residence, and several Spike Lee films, has passed away. He died peacefully on Tuesday, December 30, in New York at the age of 71 after a brief illness.
His manager, Brian Liebman, confirmed the news, describing Whitlock as both an exceptional performer and a remarkable human being. “Isiah was a brilliant actor and an even better person,” Liebman told Deadline. “He was deeply loved by everyone who had the opportunity to know or work with him, and he will be greatly missed.”
Whitlock’s screen career began with a notable guest appearance on CBS’s Cagney & Lacey in 1987. Over the next three and a half decades, he built an extensive television résumé, appearing in dozens of series, including multiple episodes across the Law & Order franchise—Law & Order, Special Victims Unit, and Criminal Intent.
He was best known for his iconic portrayal of corrupt state senator R. Clayton “Clay” Davis on HBO’s The Wire, appearing throughout all five seasons of the acclaimed drama. After recurring roles in Seasons 1 through 4, he became part of the main cast in the final season.
Whitlock also had a recurring role on HBO’s political satire Veep as Secretary of Defense General George Maddox and starred as a series regular on Showtime’s legal thriller Your Honor, where he played a politician tied to organized crime.
His final television appearance was as a series regular portraying the Chief of Police opposite Uzo Aduba in Netflix’s White House murder mystery The Residence, which premiered in March.
