Tax law controversy: PRP calls alleged alterations unforgivable breach of trust, seeks Tinubu’s impeachment if culpable

The Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) has condemned the controversy surrounding the disputed tax law, describing it as an unforgivable breach of trust and a mockery of the Nigerian people.

In a statement issued on Monday by its National Chairman, Falalu Bello, the party said President Bola Tinubu should be impeached if investigations establish his involvement in the alleged irregularities.

According to the PRP, revelations by a concerned member of the House of Representatives—described as commendable—suggest that the executive arm secretly altered bills after they had been passed by the National Assembly, without legislative approval.

The party warned that such actions reflect a dangerous trend of executive impunity capable of undermining Nigeria’s democratic foundations and due process. It described the alleged conduct as illegal and a direct assault on the independence of the legislature, as well as on Nigerians’ constitutional right to transparent and accountable governance.

The PRP therefore called for a comprehensive and transparent investigation into the alterations and additions made to the already passed Act of Parliament, urging that all individuals found responsible be identified and sanctioned.

The party said the alleged insertion, deletion, and modification of substantive provisions after legislative passage demonstrate a blatant disregard for the rule of law, separation of powers, and constitutional order, warning that such conduct erodes public trust, fuels uncertainty, and threatens national stability.

It insisted that anyone found culpable, regardless of status, must be held accountable, adding that if evidence links President Tinubu to the alleged manipulations, his impeachment should follow without delay.

The PRP also demanded the immediate suspension of the implementation of the disputed tax laws pending the resolution of all discrepancies, particularly between the versions passed by the National Assembly and those officially gazetted. The party warned that it would seek judicial intervention if the matter is not promptly addressed.

Reaffirming that no government or official is above the law, the PRP called on Nigerians, civil society groups, and the legislature to resist what it described as an assault on democracy and to defend constitutional integrity and the rule of law.
