UPDATE : FRSC cites overspeeding, improper overtaking in Anthony Joshua convoy crash

The Ogun State Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has attributed the tragic accident involving British-Nigerian boxer Anthony Joshua’s convoy to overspeeding and wrongful overtaking. The crash on the Makun axis of the Lagos-Ibadan expressway claimed two lives.

According to the Ogun Sector Command, the incident occurred at Sinoma, near Sagamu, involving two vehicles. In a press statement, FRSC PRO Afolabi Odunsi said the driver overtook from the right-hand side and collided with a stationary truck, causing the accident.

The Lexus SUV carrying Joshua, registration number KRD 850 HN, was involved in the collision on Monday, December 29. Of the five people in the vehicles, Joshua sustained injuries, two people died, and two others escaped unhurt. Joshua was promptly taken to an undisclosed hospital by his security team, while the deceased were transferred to the morgue.

The FRSC statement read: “An auto crash occurred today, December 29, 2025, involving two vehicles along the Lagos-Ibadan expressway at Sinoma. The Sagamu unit of the FRSC rescue team responded immediately. Five people were involved: one injured, two unhurt, and two fatalities. The crash was caused by overspeeding and wrongful overtaking by the driver, who overtook from the right-hand side and rammed into a stationary vehicle.”

Meanwhile, Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi confirmed that a thorough investigation into the circumstances of the crash is underway. He added that Joshua, seated in the rear of the vehicle, sustained minor injuries and is receiving medical care. Babaseyi also extended the Command’s condolences to the families of those who lost their lives.
