Watkins Nets Double as Aston Villa Stun Chelsea 2–1 at Stamford Bridge

Substitute Ollie Watkins inspired Aston Villa’s surprise Premier League title push with a second-half brace that secured a 2–1 victory over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.

The England striker, who had managed just three goals before the match, was introduced after the break by Unai Emery and made an instant impact, scoring twice to turn the game on its head.

The win, Villa’s 11th in a row, keeps them third in the table and within three points of leaders Arsenal, whom they face next on Tuesday.

Chelsea, once Arsenal’s closest rivals less than a month ago, continue to struggle for consistency, having won only once in their last six league matches to slip to fifth place.

Despite their recent form, the hosts dominated the first half and went into the interval with a deserved 1–0 lead. Cole Palmer and Enzo Fernandez both went close before Chelsea finally broke through in the 37th minute, when Reece James’ inswinging corner deflected off Joao Pedro and past a stranded Emiliano Martinez.

However, the momentum shifted after the break as Chelsea faded and Villa grew stronger.

Emery changed the course of the match with a triple substitution on the hour, bringing on Watkins alongside Jadon Sancho and Amadou Onana.

After Robert Sanchez denied Boubacar Kamara, Watkins struck the equaliser by exploiting space between Chelsea’s central defenders. Although Sanchez initially saved his effort, the rebound ricocheted off Watkins and in off the post.

Villa continued to press, with Sanchez later denying Ian Maatsen, before Watkins completed the comeback by powering home a header from Youri Tielemans’ corner.

The victory not only extends Villa’s impressive winning run but also opens a 10-point gap over Chelsea in the race for next season’s Champions League places.
