Everton manager David Moyes has emphasized that European clubs must respect the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
The timing of the tournament has frequently sparked tension between European clubs and the nations involved, as both sides often clash over the release of players for the biennial competition.
FIFA recently issued a directive allowing clubs to release players only one week before the 2025 AFCON, instead of the previously mandated two-week period.
Moyes, who will be without key players Idrissa Gueye and Iliman Ndiaye during the tournament, insisted that players should not be prevented from representing their countries.
“We have to completely respect the Africa Cup of Nations,” Moyes said at a press conference on Friday.
“The players are going to play for their countries, and rightly so. It’s an honor for them to be selected, and we hope they perform well.”
