Lagos Govt announces traffic diversion for Ajegunle City Youth Marathon

The Lagos State Government has issued a traffic advisory ahead of the Ajegunle City Youth Marathon taking place on Saturday, December 13, starting at 6:00 a.m.

Organised by the Society for Information and Human Advancement, the marathon will require several traffic diversions to ensure athlete safety and smooth movement along the route.

The advisory was released on Friday via the Lagos State Ministry of Transportation’s official X account.

According to the ministry, partial road closures will affect a number of major and inner roads in Ajegunle, including the Maracana Stadium axis, Ojoku Street, Baale Road, Kirikiri Road, Wilmer Link Bridge, Okito Street, Kopariwo Street, Mba/Cardoso Street, Cemetery Street, Ojora Street, Baale Aiyetoro Street, Olowojeunjeje Street, Oduduwa Street, Layinka Street, Cemetery Road, Bakare Faro Street, Adejiyan Street, Ishaga Street, Onishapa Street, Itire Street, Ojo Road, with the race ending at Signal Barracks.

All junctions and intersections between Maracana Stadium and Signal Barracks on Ojo Road will be partially closed and overseen by officials from LASTMA, the Nigeria Police Force, the Federal Road Safety Corps, and the Lagos State Neighbourhood Safety Corps. These points will be opened periodically to allow limited traffic flow.

To ease movement, motorists are advised to consider the following alternatives:

  • From Berger/Apapa-Oshodi Expressway to Olodi Apapa via Kirikiri: Turn right into Industrial Road, connect to Idewu Street, proceed through Oluwa Street, link Tolu Road, and return to Baale Road.

  • From Suru-Alaba (Lagos-Badagry Expressway) to Gaskiya and Iganmu Roads: A contraflow will be created along Cemetery Road from the Technoil turnoff to the roundabout.

  • From Suru-Alaba towards Ojo Road: Turn left before Signal Barracks into Charles Avenue, link Ligali Street, continue through Evie Street, join Abeje Street, and re-enter Ojo Road.

The state government assured residents that disruptions will be kept to a minimum, with traffic officers deployed across the area to assist road users.

Motorists and residents are encouraged to be patient, follow the diversion signs, and cooperate with traffic personnel to ensure a smooth and safe marathon event.
