Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, has explained the reason behind his visit to the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, who is currently serving a jail term in Sokoto.
Otti gave the explanation on Friday while receiving the leadership of the Abia Diaspora Commission and members of the state’s Global Medical Mission 2025 at the Government House in Umuahia. He stressed that the visit was not motivated by any political ambition.
His remarks followed the circulation of a social media video in which an individual criticised his decision to visit Kanu.
Defending his action, the governor said the visit was inspired by the need to promote dialogue and peace. He added that the views expressed in the viral video merely reflected differing opinions, which are a normal part of a democratic system, noting that disagreement does not necessarily make one viewpoint superior to another.
Otti also dismissed speculation about future political ambitions, stating clearly that he has no plans to seek elective office after the end of his tenure as governor.
“One of the issues raised in the video was my ambition after serving as governor,” he said.
“I have made this clear before, in October, when we received representatives of the President, and I will repeat it today: once I complete my tenure as governor, I will retire from public service.”
