The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has officially named Wilfred Ndidi as the new captain of the Super Eagles, succeeding William Troost-Ekong, who retired from international football earlier this month.
The 28-year-old Besiktas midfielder takes over the armband following Troost-Ekong's announcement on December 4. The NFF confirmed Ndidi's appointment, with Moses Simon, Alex Iwobi, and Victor Osimhen designated as vice-captains.
Ndidi, a former Leicester City star, will lead Nigeria at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco, which begins on December 21 with the opening match in Rabat.
Emphasizing teamwork for success, Ndidi shared his thoughts with the Super Eagles media: “It’s a huge responsibility, but with the help of the players, everything will be smooth.”
He added, “I’ve had conversations with a couple of the players just to let them know the reason why we are here. I also need their support as well—the staff too. We are all in this together. We’ve discussed the task ahead, and it’s important for us to be on the same page.”
