Cocona, a well-known member of the Japanese music group XG, has revealed that they identify as transmasculine and nonbinary. The announcement came on their 20th birthday and included the disclosure that they underwent top surgery earlier this year. Cocona did not indicate any new pronouns.
They shared the news on Instagram with XG’s 3.2 million followers, posting photos in an open black blazer that showed their top surgery scar. In the translated message, Cocona said the feelings behind this revelation had been with them “for a long time.”
Cocona explained:
“I was born and seen as female, but that label never reflected who I really am. I live in a way that feels more masculine and more like myself. Accepting who I am was the hardest challenge I’ve ever faced, but once I began to embrace myself, a new path opened.”
They also thanked their fellow members, their parents, and XG’s global fanbase, writing:
“This message became a little long, but I simply want to say thank you for supporting me and walking with me. I’m excited for the future we’ll create together.”
Cocona is one of the seven members of XG, a hip-hop and R&B-inspired group that debuted in 2022 alongside Jurin, Chisa, Hinata, Harvey, Juria, and Maya.
Since debuting, the group has embarked on a world tour, performed at Coachella, and is gearing up to release their first full-length album, THE CORE, in January 2026.
