2027: I’ll only align with a party ready to offer me presidential or VP ticket — Kwankwaso

The national leader of the New Nigerian Peoples Party (NNPP), Rabiu Kwankwaso, has outlined strict conditions for joining any political coalition or alliance ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Kwankwaso said discussions are ongoing about merging with another party, but stressed that any such party must be prepared to concede either its presidential or vice-presidential ticket to him.

His comments come amid speculation that the former minister is being pressured to align with the African Democratic Congress (ADC). The ADC is believed to be attracting several high-profile figures, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former presidential candidate Peter Obi, and former Minister of Transportation Chibuike Amaechi, all reportedly interested in contesting the presidency.

There are also reports that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) is courting Kwankwaso to support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027.

However, while addressing supporters in Kano on Saturday, Kwankwaso made his position clear, insisting he would only join a party willing to present him as either presidential or vice-presidential candidate.

“We are searching for a party, but they must agree to give me, Rabiu Kwankwaso, the presidential or vice-presidential ticket,” he said.

Kwankwaso finished a distant third in the 2023 presidential election, trailing President Tinubu, Atiku Abubakar, and Peter Obi.
