The African Union (AU) has strongly criticised the United States over its reported military strikes in Venezuela and the capture of President Nicolás Maduro by US forces.
In a statement issued on Saturday, the continental body said it was monitoring developments in the South American nation with deep concern, following reports of attacks on Venezuelan state institutions.
The AU noted that the alleged abduction of President Maduro, alongside military actions targeting government institutions, raises serious questions about adherence to international law and respect for national sovereignty.
Reaffirming its commitment to the core principles of international law, the AU stressed the importance of respecting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of states, as well as the right of peoples to self-determination, as enshrined in the United Nations Charter.
The organisation also underscored the need for dialogue, peaceful resolution of disputes, and respect for constitutional and institutional frameworks, urging nations to uphold these principles in the spirit of cooperation, good neighbourliness, and peaceful coexistence.
According to the statement, the AU maintained that Venezuela’s complex internal challenges can only be resolved sustainably through inclusive political dialogue among Venezuelans themselves.
The African Union expressed solidarity with the Venezuelan people and reiterated its commitment to promoting peace, stability, and mutual respect among nations and regions. It further called on all parties involved to act with restraint and responsibility, respect international law, and avoid actions that could escalate tensions or undermine regional peace and stability.
