Just minutes after confirming the dismissal of Xabi Alonso, Real Madrid have officially announced that former defender Álvaro Arbeloa has been appointed as the club’s new first-team manager.
Real Madrid CF announces that Álvaro Arbeloa is the new first-team coach, the club said in an official statement.
Arbeloa, a former Real Madrid player, spent seven seasons at the Santiago Bernabéu between 2009 and 2016. During that time, he made over 200 appearances and won multiple domestic and international trophies.
Following his retirement in 2020, Arbeloa returned to the club as a coach within La Fábrica. He began with Infantil A in the 2020–21 season, guiding the team to a league title, before taking charge of Cadete A in 2021–22. He then managed Juvenil A from 2022 to 2025.
During his spell with Juvenil A, Arbeloa enjoyed significant success, winning a historic treble in the 2022–23 season—claiming the league, Copa del Rey, and Champions Cup—followed by another league title in 2024–25.
Last summer, he was promoted to manage Castilla, succeeding another club icon, Raúl González. His impressive work with the reserve side quickly caught the attention of the club’s hierarchy, earning him the opportunity to step up to the first team.
Arbeloa’s first match in charge will come later this week, when Real Madrid face Albacete in the Copa del Rey Round of 16 on Wednesday.
