The decision was made less than 24 hours after Los Blancos suffered a 3–2 defeat to Barcelona in the Supercopa final. Following the match, Alonso downplayed the loss, describing the competition as “the least important” they would contest this season.
In a statement, the club announced that both parties had mutually agreed to end Alonso’s tenure as first-team coach. Real Madrid praised the former midfielder, calling him a club legend who embodies its values, and expressed gratitude for his commitment and service, wishing him and his coaching staff success in the future.
Alonso had been under increasing scrutiny due to the team’s disappointing performances in LaLiga and the Champions League.
The sacking comes just two days before Madrid’s Copa del Rey Round of 16 encounter against Albacete.
