The Taraba State Police Command has arrested a man identified as Haggai Ishaku over allegations that he assaulted his teenage daughter, Rachael Haggai Ishaku.
The incident reportedly occurred at their residence behind the NLC Secretariat near Shimo FM in Jalingo, where the girl allegedly sustained serious injuries, including a broken hand.
The arrest followed the intervention of human rights activist Abdulmumin Imam, after the case sparked public outrage. The suspect is currently being detained at the GRA Police Division in Jalingo.
During police questioning, Ishaku reportedly claimed he had repeatedly warned his daughter that she was too young to have a boyfriend and accused her of associating with boys against his instructions. He further alleged that during the New Year crossover period, she did not attend a church service as claimed, but went elsewhere.
However, the teenager denied her father’s allegations in an interview with Abdulmumin Imam and the police, insisting that she attended a church crossover night service. She also accused her father of routinely restraining her before physically assaulting her.
Police say investigations into the matter are ongoing.
