Manchester United have parted ways with head coach Ruben Amorim, the club confirmed on Monday, January 5, 2026.
The Portuguese tactician, who took charge of the Red Devils in November 2024, was relieved of his duties following mounting concerns over the team’s performances and remarks that highlighted internal tensions at Old Trafford.
At the time of his dismissal, United were sixth in the Premier League standings. Reports indicate that Amorim’s exit came less than 24 hours after he publicly criticised the club’s hierarchy during a post-match press conference following a 1–1 draw with Leeds United.
Sources say the club’s leadership moved swiftly after the controversial comments, in which Amorim questioned his role and authority, intensifying pressure on him less than two seasons into his tenure.
Manchester United are expected to appoint an interim manager as they begin the search for a permanent replacement.
In a subsequent statement on the club’s website, United announced that former player Darren Fletcher will oversee the team’s next fixture against Burnley.
The statement read in part: “Ruben Amorim has departed his role as Head Coach of Manchester United.
“Appointed in November 2024, Ruben guided the team to the UEFA Europa League final in Bilbao in May.
“With the club currently sixth in the Premier League, the leadership has reluctantly decided that now is the right time for a change to give the team the best chance of achieving the highest possible league finish.
“The club thanks Ruben for his contributions and wishes him success in the future. Darren Fletcher will take charge of the team against Burnley on Wednesday.”
