Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has dismissed claims by Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, that some former supporters of ex–Vice President Atiku Abubakar are now backing President Bola Tinubu.
Governor Fubara had stated during a New Year banquet in Port Harcourt on Thursday that figures such as Prince Uche Secondus, Rt. Hon. Austin Opara, Alabo Abiye Sekibo and former governor Sir Celestine Omehia were now aligned with him and President Tinubu.
Responding on Friday while addressing residents of Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni (ONELGA) Local Government Area, Wike said the same individuals failed to secure even 10 per cent of the votes for Atiku during the 2023 presidential election.
“I heard someone say that those who worked for Atiku are back. They couldn’t give Atiku 10 per cent in 2023, so what political value do they bring?” Wike said. “I won’t mention names, but you all know them. We will do everything possible to give President Tinubu the full support he needs.”
Wike also reaffirmed his commitment to mobilising support for Tinubu ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
In the same address, the former Rivers State governor took a swipe at Ohanaeze President-General, John Mbata, over comments describing him as a semi-illiterate.
“Normally, I wouldn’t respond, but let me say this,” Wike said. “A former senator called the FCT Minister a semi-illiterate, yet he dropped out of Rivers State University while studying law. I completed my studies at the University of Port Harcourt, went on to law school, and today I am a life bencher.
“The so-called semi-illiterate also holds the fourth-highest national honour in Nigeria.”
