Trump attributes hand bruises to aspirin use, dismisses claims of dozing off in meetings

US President Donald Trump has said the bruising frequently seen on his hand is a result of taking aspirin, while firmly rejecting suggestions that he falls asleep during public events.

In an interview published on Thursday, January 1, Trump defended his physical condition, describing his health as “perfect” and expressing annoyance at ongoing speculation about his wellbeing. He also clarified a previous comment about a medical scan he underwent in October, explaining that it was a CT scan, not an MRI as earlier stated.

At 79, Trump is the oldest individual to take office as US president. Throughout his political career, he has consistently projected vigor and stamina through regular media appearances, constant online activity, and AI-generated images portraying him in heroic form. However, the early phase of his second term has renewed public focus on his health.

Observers have noted recurring bruises on Trump’s right hand, often covered with makeup or bandages, as well as occasional swelling around his ankles. He has also faced criticism over moments when he appeared to struggle to keep his eyes open during official engagements, including a televised Oval Office meeting with health officials in November. The scrutiny is heightened by Trump’s past habit of labeling his predecessor, Joe Biden, as “sleepy.”

Biden exited office at age 82, making him the oldest president in US history — a record Trump is expected to surpass if he completes his current term.

Trump, who admits he does little exercise beyond playing golf and enjoys fast food, explained that the bruising is linked to his daily aspirin intake, which he said he uses as a blood thinner.

“I don’t want thick blood flowing through my heart,” he said, adding that he applies makeup or bandages when his hand gets bumped.

He also said one of the marks on his hand was caused when Attorney General Pam Bondi accidentally struck him with her ring during a high-five.

Addressing confusion over his medical tests, Trump acknowledged that he misspoke earlier, noting that the scan conducted in October was a CT scan, not an MRI. His physician later confirmed the scan was performed to rule out cardiovascular concerns.

Trump also dismissed claims that he sleeps during meetings, saying he is not a heavy sleeper and that such interpretations are misleading.

“I’ll just close my eyes — it’s very relaxing to me,” he said, adding that images suggesting he is nodding off are often taken while he is simply blinking.
