Political economist Prof. Pat Utomi has argued that individuals older than 70 years should not contest for executive offices such as president or governor in Nigeria.
Utomi made the remarks on Thursday during an interview on Politics Today, a Channels Television programme monitored by SNOW TVW NEWS while discussing leadership and eligibility for public office.
“I strongly believe the Nigerian people must be persuaded that no one above the age of 70 should run for any executive position, whether as president or governor,” he said.
He noted that while some lawmakers could remain effective in legislative roles into their mid-70s or even late-70s, the same should not apply to executive offices.
“The presidency should not become a place where people who constantly need medical attention are kept,” Utomi stated, adding that such a situation places an unnecessary burden on taxpayers.
According to him, Nigerians ultimately pay the price through poor service delivery when leaders are unable to perform optimally due to age-related limitations.
