Mayor Akmad Ampatuan of Shariff Aguak, Maguindanao del Sur, Philippines, narrowly escaped an assassination attempt on Sunday morning after his armoured vehicle withstood an explosive attack by armed assailants.
CCTV footage captured the moment suspects stepped out of a white minivan and fired a grenade launcher at the mayor’s black SUV in Barangay Poblacion at about 6:20 a.m.
Following the attack, a joint operation by the police and the military led to a pursuit during which three of the suspected attackers were neutralised.
Confirming the incident, the mayor’s executive assistant, Anwar Kuit Emblawa, said Ampatuan was unharmed.
“The mayor is safe,” Emblawa said in a text message to reporters.
He explained that Ampatuan was inside his bulletproof black SUV when the attack occurred around 6:30 a.m. His escort vehicle, a pickup truck, was also struck by gunfire.
Emblawa added that two security aides sustained minor injuries and are currently receiving treatment at the Bangsamoro Regional and Medical Center in Datu Hoffer.
Authorities said the attackers carried out the ambush using a white minivan.
According to police spokesperson Tuaño, this marks the fourth attack on Mayor Ampatuan. Previous incidents include a roadside bombing in 2010, an ambush in 2014, and another attack in 2019.
