Ex-Abia Governor, Senator Theodore Orji, Resigns from PDP

Former Abia State Governor and Senator, Theodore Orji, has officially resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Orji announced his decision in a letter on Saturday, stating that his resignation takes immediate effect.

The former governor initially won the Abia governorship in 2007 under the Progressive Peoples Alliance (PPA) but later joined the PDP in 2011 following a long-standing dispute with his predecessor, Chief Orji Uzor Kalu. He secured a second term as governor on the PDP platform and was elected to the Senate in 2015, serving two terms for eight years under the party.

Orji’s resignation follows a series of defections from the PDP in 2024. His son, Rt. Hon. Chinedum Orji, former Speaker of the Abia State House of Assembly, had earlier moved to the All Progressives Congress (APC), as had Orji’s wife.

In his resignation letter, Orji wrote:

“I write to formally tender my resignation from membership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) effective immediately. This decision has been taken after wide consultations with family and associates. I appreciate the opportunities and experiences gained during my time as a member of the party. Please accept this letter as a formal notice of my withdrawal from the party.”
