Former President Goodluck Jonathan has warned that Nigeria’s democracy is being “stifled” by increasingly reckless political conduct.
He stressed that politics must never become a platform for unruly or destructive behaviour, noting that no government can thrive without the support of its citizens—and no people can progress without leaders who listen, act responsibly, and offer clear direction.
Jonathan emphasized that true leadership rests on responsibility, nation-building, and self-restraint. According to him, preserving democratic stability demands civility, accountability, and a sincere commitment to the public good from all political actors.
The former president made these remarks at the 10th anniversary dinner of the Goodluck Jonathan Foundation in Abuja, an event that also marked his 68th birthday. The ceremony drew a distinguished gathering of African statesmen, diplomats, political figures, and business leaders.
“Politics is not for rascals. It is for those who build, not destroy,” Jonathan stated, cautioning that rising aggressive rhetoric and hostile political behaviour are eroding democratic resilience across the continent.
