AFCON: Super Eagles step up preparations for Tanzania showdown

The Super Eagles continued their build-up to the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations with an intensive training session in Fes, Morocco, on Sunday, ahead of their Group C opener against Tanzania on Tuesday.

Nigeria will face the Taifa Stars at the Complex Sportif de Fes in the opening match of the group. Sunday’s workout marked the team’s fourth training session since arriving in Morocco last Thursday.

The three-time African champions had earlier held two training sessions on Friday, followed by additional drills on Saturday and Sunday, as they fine-tuned preparations for the tournament. Prior to their arrival in Morocco, the Eagles spent five days in camp in Egypt, where they suffered a 2–1 defeat to the hosts in a pre-AFCON friendly.

Tanzania, coached by Miguel Gamondi, are making just their fourth appearance at the AFCON, having previously exited at the group stage in 1980, 2019 and 2023. The East Africans are still searching for their first win at the competition, with three draws and six losses from nine matches.

Gamondi is expected to rely heavily on captain Mbwana Samatta of French Ligue 1 side Le Havre and experienced winger Simon Msuva, who currently plays in Iraq. Other key players include wing-back Mohammed Hussein of Young Africans and creative midfielder Feisal Salum of Azam FC.

After Tuesday’s clash with Tanzania, Nigeria will face Tunisia’s Carthage Eagles on December 27 before rounding off the group stage against Uganda’s Cranes on December 30.

Runners-up at the last edition after losing 2–1 to hosts Ivory Coast, the Super Eagles are aiming to secure a fourth AFCON title, having previously won the competition in 1980, 1994 and 2013.

The 2025 AFCON kicked off on Sunday with hosts Morocco taking on Comoros. Other opening fixtures include Mali versus Zambia in Group A, while seven-time champions Egypt begin their Group B campaign against Zimbabwe, with South Africa also set to face Angola.

Meanwhile, the Nigeria Football Federation has unveiled the “NAIJA 4 THE WIN” campaign as the Super Eagles begin their quest for continental glory in Morocco.
