Candle-triggered fire razes Abia home, leaves family homeless

A family of six has been left homeless after a fire, reportedly caused by a candle, destroyed their residence at Agbama Housing Estate in Umuahia, Abia State.

The incident affected Mr. and Mrs. Godwin Nwosu and their four children. The fire reportedly broke out after the children fell asleep while using a candle to study. At the time of the incident, both parents were away from home.

The couple said the blaze consumed all their belongings, leaving nothing to be salvaged. Speaking tearfully, Mrs. Nwosu explained that the candle had been lit to provide light for reading due to prolonged power outages in the area. She added that she had purchased the candle to study for her upcoming NCE examinations.

Her husband, Mr. Godwin Nwosu, a tricycle operator in Umuahia, lamented that the fire wiped out everything the family had worked for throughout 2025.

“I am now homeless with my family. The fire completely destroyed our house, and we couldn’t save anything because we were not around when it happened,” he said.

While expressing gratitude that their children escaped unharmed, the couple appealed to the public for temporary shelter and financial assistance to help them rebuild their lives.
