AFCON to move to four-year cycle after 2028

The Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) will transition to a four-year cycle beginning after the 2028 edition, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has announced.

CAF president Patrice Motsepe confirmed the decision on Saturday, explaining that it forms part of a broader restructuring of international football in Africa aimed at aligning the continental calendar with an increasingly crowded global schedule.

While the biennial AFCON has long served as a major source of income for African football associations, Motsepe said the planned introduction of an annual African Nations League — modeled after UEFA’s Nations League — would help offset revenue concerns.

“Our immediate focus is this AFCON, but in 2027 we will be heading to Tanzania, Kenya and Uganda, and the next AFCON after that will be held in 2028,” Motsepe told reporters in Rabat on Saturday, ahead of the opening match of the Morocco-hosted tournament.

He added that CAF would open a bidding process for countries interested in hosting the 2028 Africa Cup of Nations.
