Former Niger State Governor and Chairman of the Former Governors’ Forum, Babangida Aliyu, has warned that Nigeria is drifting toward a one-party state under the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Aliyu raised the concern during an interactive session between the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) National Working Committee (NWC) and the Former Ministers’ Forum, citing shrinking political space, forced defections, and the erosion of opposition structures.
“We are deeply troubled by the aggressive actions of the APC aimed at weakening the opposition. The constant luring of opposition members and the use of state institutions to silence dissent are strong signs that the country is sliding dangerously toward a one-party system,” he said.
He stressed that a strong and vibrant opposition is critical to democratic growth, while congratulating the newly elected PDP NWC led by Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, SAN, expressing confidence in its leadership.
“The PDP is not finished; it is transforming,” Aliyu said, commending Turaki’s efforts to reposition the party through renewed focus, discipline, and reconciliation.
In his response, PDP National Chairman Turaki highlighted the party’s 16 years in government, describing the period as a benchmark for national development marked by economic expansion, debt relief, and the growth of the middle class.
He listed major accomplishments such as the liberalisation of the telecommunications sector, banking reforms, settlement of the Paris Club debt, and the creation of anti-corruption agencies including the EFCC and ICPC.
Also speaking at the event, former Kano State Governor and ex-Minister, Ibrahim Shekarau, encouraged the new NWC to stay resolute, telling them: “Do not relent; you have exceeded expectations.”
The forum’s endorsement of the PDP’s leadership underscores a renewed commitment to strengthening opposition politics and safeguarding democratic balance amid concerns over increasing political dominance by the APC.
