Court grants Chris Ngige bail in alleged corruption case

A Federal High Court in Gwaripa, Abuja, on Wednesday, December 18, granted bail to former Minister of Labour and Productivity, Chris Ngige, in his ongoing corruption trial.

Justice Maryam Hassan approved the bail and adopted the same conditions earlier granted to Ngige through administrative bail by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

As part of the conditions, the court ordered Ngige to provide one surety who must be a director on the federal government payroll and own property within the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). He was also directed to surrender his travel documents to the court.

Justice Hassan noted that the grant of bail lies within the court’s discretion and stressed that bail conditions must not be excessive or oppressive, adding that judicial powers should not be exercised arbitrarily.

The court adjourned the matter to January 28 and 29, 2026, for trial.

Ngige, who served as minister between November 11, 2015, and May 29, 2023, is facing trial over an alleged ₦2.2 billion contract fraud brought against him by the EFCC.
