Manchester United prospects Harry Amass and Chido Obi appeared to respond to public criticism from head coach Ruben Amorim through cryptic social media posts that were later deleted.
The posts followed Amorim’s comments when questioned about his limited use of academy graduate Kobbie Mainoo. The Portuguese coach suggested that Amass and Obi are currently not performing at the required standard.
Speaking after a match, Amorim said:
“I don’t know what the future holds for Mainoo. We’ll see after this match. Amass is struggling in the Championship, and Chido isn’t always a starter for the Under-21s. These players featured during a period when many people were calling for the manager to be sacked.”
Shortly after, Amass posted a photo of himself smiling while holding November’s Player of the Month award, accompanied by a smiley-face emoji. The post was removed within minutes. Daily Mail Sport reports that Amass and his representatives were unhappy with Amorim’s remarks.
Obi, who is currently injured, shared a similar message by posting an image of himself celebrating a goal for United’s Under-21 side. That post was also quickly deleted, and he has since removed any reference to Manchester United from his social media biography.
The 18-year-old forward is joint top scorer for the Under-21s this season. His limited starts are largely due to a rotation policy implemented by coach Travis Binnion, who alternates Obi with Gabriele Biancheri to give both players equal opportunities. Each has scored five goals.
Both Amass and Obi made their senior debuts under Amorim during the 2024–25 season. Obi has featured eight times for the first team, seven as a substitute, while Amass has made seven appearances, including four Premier League starts.
