Google is finally letting users to change their Gmail address

Google has introduced a long-awaited feature that allows Gmail users to change their email addresses, offering relief to those still using outdated or awkward usernames created years ago.

According to an update on Google’s account help page, users can now replace their existing @gmail.com address with a new one without losing access to their data or services. All emails, photos, messages, and other account information will remain intact after the change.

Notably, the updated instructions currently appear only on the Hindi version of Google’s support page, indicating that the feature may be rolling out first in India or Hindi-speaking regions. The page also notes that the update is being introduced gradually, with a wider global rollout expected. Meanwhile, the English version of the support page still states that Gmail addresses generally cannot be changed.

Under the new system, the original Gmail address will be retained as an alias, meaning emails sent to the old address will still be delivered. Users will also continue to use the original address to sign in to Google services such as Drive, Maps, and YouTube.

Previously, changing a Gmail address required creating a new account and manually transferring data, a process that often caused disruptions, especially with third-party app integrations.

Google further clarified that users can reuse their old email address if needed. However, once an address change is made, users will not be able to create another new Gmail address for 12 months, and the newly chosen address cannot be deleted.
