Two unidentified adult men have been recovered dead from the wreckage of the Great Nigeria Insurance House on Lagos Island after a devastating fire engulfed the building.
The bodies were found on Friday during ongoing search and rescue operations at the Marina area, where the high-rise structure was badly affected by the blaze that broke out on Thursday.
According to reports, the fire started on the fourth floor of the 25-storey building, spread to the sixth floor, and later extended to several other levels as well as nearby structures. Part of the building reportedly collapsed during the incident, trapping some traders beneath the debris.
The inferno also affected surrounding properties, including the Old Lagos Central Mosque.
Attempts to get official comments from the Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Dr. Femi Oke-Osanyintolu, were unsuccessful as he did not respond to enquiries as of the time of filing this report.
However, a LASEMA official, who requested anonymity, confirmed that the bodies were recovered during ongoing operations to locate individuals believed to be trapped in the rubble.
The official stated that one body was recovered at about 11:03 a.m., while the second was found around 12:03 p.m.
Search, recovery, and safety operations are still underway as emergency responders continue efforts to identify victims, account for those affected, and prevent further risks at the site.
