A notable moment of cultural recognition took place at the Vatican on December 24 during the Christmas Vigil Mass, as the Igbo language was included in the liturgy.
During the Mass celebrated by Pope Leo XIV at St Peter’s Basilica, one of the intentions in the Prayer of the Faithful was read in Igbo, acknowledging the presence and contributions of Igbo Catholics within the global Church.
The use of the Igbo language underscored the diversity of the Catholic community worldwide and reflected the Church’s emphasis on universality during the Christmas celebration at the Vatican.
Additionally, an Igbo couple took part in the Eucharistic Procession, joining other participants in presenting the offertory gifts to the Pope during the Mass.
