PDP is finished, beyond repair – Hakeem Baba-Ahmed

Former Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Political Affairs, Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, has declared that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is no longer salvageable.

Baba-Ahmed made the remarks on Thursday during an interview on Arise Television, where he assessed Nigeria’s political landscape ahead of the 2027 general elections.

According to him, the PDP has been in steady decline for years and lacks the capacity to recover. He argued that the party is not the only platform capable of challenging the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), noting that other parties, including the African Democratic Congress (ADC), could also serve as credible opposition.

“The PDP is drifting. I believe it is gone and cannot be fixed,” he said. “We often blame the government, but we overlook the damage the PDP has inflicted on itself. The party has been in free fall for a long time.”

Baba-Ahmed explained that many PDP leaders, having governed for years, struggled to adapt to life in opposition after losing power. He noted that while President Tinubu deserves criticism in some areas—particularly concerns about the concentration of influence—these issues do not excuse the PDP’s internal failures.

He accused the party of repeatedly undermining itself, despite its strong beginnings and the calibre of leaders who once built it. According to him, the PDP has consistently allowed internal divisions to weaken it, resulting in repeated defections and splits.

“The party has fractured before, notably in 2015, and it is happening again,” he said, adding that the inability of PDP leaders to manage internal crises has brought the party to its current state of decline.
