Mbappé Sidelined for Three Weeks with Knee Sprain

Real Madrid have confirmed that Kylian MbappĂ© has suffered a knee sprain, dealing a blow to the club’s push to close the gap on La Liga leaders Barcelona.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, December 31, the Spanish giants said medical examinations revealed a sprain in the forward’s left knee. “Following tests carried out today by Real Madrid’s medical team, Kylian MbappĂ© has been diagnosed with a sprain in his left knee. His recovery will be monitored,” the club said.

Although no official return date was provided, a source close to the France international told AFP that Mbappé is expected to be out of action for at least three weeks.

The injury casts doubt over the 27-year-old’s availability for Sunday’s home league clash against Real Betis, Madrid’s first match after the winter break. Real Madrid currently trail Barcelona by four points in the title race.

Mbappé could also miss the Spanish Super Cup semi-final against Atletico Madrid in Saudi Arabia on January 8, as well as a league fixture against Levante and a Champions League encounter with his former club, Monaco.

The setback comes during what has otherwise been a remarkable year for MbappĂ©. In 2025, he equalled Cristiano Ronaldo’s club record of 59 goals in a calendar year and has been instrumental for Real Madrid, often helping to ease pressure on head coach Xabi Alonso.
