Actor Mel Gibson and writer Rosalind Ross have ended their relationship after nine years.
In a joint statement to People on Tuesday, December 30, the former couple confirmed the separation, saying that while the decision was difficult, they remain focused on their family.
“Though it’s painful to close this chapter of our lives, we are grateful for our beautiful son and are committed to being the best parents we can be,” the statement read.
Gibson, 69, and Ross, 35, reportedly went their separate ways quietly about a year ago and have agreed to co-parent their eight-year-old son, Lars.
The pair met through mutual friends in 2014 and soon began dating. By 2016, reports emerged that they were expecting a child together, and they welcomed their son in 2017, shortly before Gibson received an Academy Award nomination for Best Director for Hacksaw Ridge.
At the time, Gibson described the moment as unforgettable, saying there was nothing more exciting than hearing the Oscar nominations announced while holding his newborn son.
Although they largely kept their relationship private, Gibson and Ross made occasional public appearances, including walking the red carpet together at the 2017 Oscars and making their debut as a couple at the Cannes Film Festival the year before. Gibson was also seen attending a screening of Monster Summer with their son in 2024.
In January 2025, the family suffered a major loss when their $14.5 million Malibu home was destroyed in the Los Angeles wildfires. Gibson later expressed gratitude that his loved ones were safe and unharmed.
Gibson is also a father to eight other children from previous relationships. He shares seven children with his former wife, Robyn Moore, whom he was married to from 1980 to 2011, and has a 16-year-old daughter, Lucia, with ex-girlfriend Oksana Grigorieva.
