The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) has announced that the National Identification Number (NIN) now automatically functions as the Tax Identification Number (Tax ID) for Nigerians. This clarification follows public discussions around tax law provisions requiring a Tax ID for bank account ownership.
In a public awareness campaign on the new tax laws shared on X on Monday, December 22, FIRS explained that under the new tax framework, registered businesses will use their Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) Registration (RC) number as their Tax ID.
According to the agency, the Nigeria Tax Administration Act (NTAA), which is set to take effect in January 2026, makes the use of a Tax ID mandatory for certain financial and commercial transactions. FIRS noted that this requirement has existed since the Finance Act of 2019 but has now been reinforced under the NTAA.
The Service further stated that the Tax ID consolidates all previously issued Tax Identification Numbers by FIRS and state Internal Revenue Services into a single identifier. For individuals, the NIN serves as the Tax ID, while registered companies use their CAC RC number. FIRS emphasized that no physical card is required, as the Tax ID is a unique number directly linked to an individual’s or company’s identity.
