PMAN NEC suspends Pretty Okafor, names Sydney Sparrow acting president

The National Executive Council (NEC) of the Performing Musicians Association of Nigeria (PMAN) has appointed Mr Sydney Sparrow as Acting National President following the suspension of the association’s substantive president, Mr Pretty Okafor.

The decision was announced in a statement signed by PMAN’s National Treasurer, Mr Baba Ojonugwa, and released to journalists in Owerri on Friday.

Ojonugwa explained that Sparrow’s appointment resulted from an emergency NEC meeting convened to address what he described as serious governance and constitutional issues within the association.

According to him, the meeting, held on the night of December 25, 2025, resolved—under the powers granted by the PMAN Constitution—to suspend Okafor pending the conclusion of a full investigation and disciplinary process.

He said the suspension followed alleged breaches including repeated violations of constitutional provisions, abuse of office, disregard for due process, and actions considered harmful to PMAN’s welfare, credibility, and integrity.

Ojonugwa added that the NEC adopted several measures aimed at restoring order and transparency in the association. These include nullifying all unilateral appointments, reinstating the National Treasurer, initiating a forensic audit of PMAN’s accounts and joint venture agreements, and appointing an Acting National President in line with the constitution.

“In the interim, Sydney Sparrow, PMAN Governor for the FCT, has been nominated as the Acting National President of PMAN National,” he stated.

He assured PMAN members nationwide that the NEC’s actions were corrective rather than punitive, reaffirming the council’s commitment to transparency, accountability, and the protection of the collective interests of Nigerian musicians.
