Reaction as PDP pulls out of Borno LG elections

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Borno State has announced its withdrawal from the local government elections scheduled for Saturday, December 13.

According to the party, the decision was driven by lack of trust in the state electoral commission and the high cost of expression of interest and nomination forms.

In a statement issued on Friday, the party’s Publicity Secretary, Amos Adziba, explained that the decision was reached during a recent State Executive Committee (SEC) meeting in Maiduguri.

Titled Why We’re Boycotting Borno LG Polls,” the statement accused the Borno State Independent Electoral Commission (BOSIEC) of failing to provide opposition parties with sufficient assurance of a credible and fair election.

“The PDP in Borno State will not take part in the December 13, 2025 local government elections due to the high cost of forms and lack of confidence in the electoral body,” the statement said.

Adziba added that the party had no trust in BOSIEC or the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), noting that the commission had not provided meaningful reasons to inspire confidence in its neutrality.

He also criticized BOSIEC for ignoring the current economic hardship while demanding expensive nomination and interest forms.

The party further faulted the state government’s refusal to amend the electoral bill to allow councillorship results to be announced at ward level and chairmanship results at local government headquarters.

“Since no amendment has been made, it appears the APC intends to maintain its usual tactics and leave room for electoral malpractice,” Adziba stated.
