Actor James Ransone, best known for his role as Ziggy Sobotka in HBO’s The Wire, has died at the age of 46.
According to the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner, Ransone passed away in Los Angeles on Friday, December 19, with his death ruled a suicide. He is survived by his wife, Jamie McPhee, and their two children. McPhee shared a fundraiser in his memory supporting the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI).
Ransone gained wide recognition for portraying Ziggy, the troubled son of dockworker Frank Sobotka, in the second season of The Wire, appearing in 12 episodes in 2003. He later featured in several acclaimed television series, including Generation Kill, Treme, and Bosch. His final television appearance was in a Season 2 episode of Poker Face, which aired in June.
In film, Ransone appeared in numerous productions such as Prom Night (2008), Sinister (2012), Sinister 2 (2015), Tangerine (2015), Mr. Right (2015), It Chapter Two (2019), The Black Phone (2021), and Black Phone 2 (2025).
In 2021, Ransone publicly shared that he was a survivor of childhood sexual abuse. He alleged that a former tutor abused him in the early 1990s and said the experience had long-lasting effects on his life, including struggles with addiction. After achieving sobriety in 2006, he later reported the allegations to authorities.
However, following a police investigation, prosecutors declined to pursue charges, according to reports by the Baltimore Sun.
Ransone’s death has prompted renewed conversations around mental health awareness, trauma, and the importance of support for those facing long-term psychological challenges.
