American hip-hop star Wiz Khalifa has been sentenced to nine months in prison by a Romanian court over a drug-related offence tied to a performance in the country last year.
The conviction was issued in absentia after prosecutors successfully appealed an earlier ruling that had only imposed a monetary fine.
Born Cameron Jibril Thomaz, Khalifa was arrested in July 2024 for allegedly smoking cannabis during a live show at a music festival in Costinești, a resort town on Romania’s Black Sea coast. He was briefly detained before being released and later issued a public apology, stating that his actions were not meant to disrespect Romanian laws or culture.
Initially, the Constanța Tribunal fined him 3,000 lei (about $690). Unsatisfied with this outcome, prosecutors from the Directorate for Investigating Organized Crime and Terrorism (DIICOT) appealed, arguing that the offence warranted a custodial sentence.
The appellate court agreed, converting the fine into a nine-month prison term for illegal possession of a high-risk drug for personal use. Reports indicate the decision is final under Romanian law.
Wiz Khalifa is currently in the United States, and it is unclear whether Romanian authorities will pursue extradition. There has been no confirmation that the sentence will be enforced.
Romania enforces strict anti-drug laws, prohibiting cannabis for both recreational and medical use.
