President Bola Tinubu has pledged that operatives of the proposed state police will be adequately armed as part of efforts to tackle Nigeria’s long-running security challenges.
The president made this declaration on Friday while addressing members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) during the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting at the State House Conference Centre in Abuja.
Tinubu also announced plans to create forest rangers, noting that they too would be armed to confront terrorism and banditry across the country.
According to him, the Federal Government is determined to adopt decisive measures to defeat criminal groups threatening lives and property.
“We are moving towards state police. We will also establish forest rangers, and they will be armed. We will defeat terrorists and bandits — we must do so,” the president said.
SNOW TV NEWS reports that amid a recent rise in killings and attacks by criminal elements nationwide, Tinubu has renewed his commitment to the creation of state-level policing structures.
While some stakeholders remain cautious about the initiative, citing fears of potential misuse by state governors, the National Assembly has expressed support for the establishment of state police as part of broader security reforms.
