British-Nigerian boxing star Anthony Joshua has been released from hospital two days after sustaining injuries in a tragic road accident in Nigeria that claimed the lives of two of his close friends, Lateef Ayodele and Cina Gami.
In a joint statement issued on Wednesday by Lagos State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso, and Ogun State Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Kayode Akinmade, the governments of both states expressed deep sympathy to the bereaved families.
“The governments of Lagos and Ogun states once again extend their condolences to the families of the two young men, Lateef Ayodele and Cina Gami, who sadly lost their lives in the road accident involving Anthony Joshua. We pray that Almighty God grants their souls eternal rest and reminds their families and loved ones with strength to bear this painful loss,” the statement said.
The statement confirmed that Joshua was discharged from hospital late on Tuesday afternoon. It noted that although he was emotionally distressed by the loss of his friends, he was certified medically fit to continue his recovery at home.
It also revealed that Joshua, accompanied by his mother, visited a funeral home in Lagos the same day to pay his last respects to the deceased, whose bodies were being prepared for repatriation later that evening.
The statement further praised the medical team that attended to Joshua and other injured persons, commending the doctors and staff of Lagoon Hospital, Ikoyi, for their professionalism and quality care.
Governors Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State and Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State also expressed appreciation to the public and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the support and concern shown during the period.
Meanwhile, the Ogun State Police Command has confirmed that investigations into the circumstances surrounding the accident are ongoing.
