New Year Tragedy: Speeding Driver Kills Six, Injures Two on Lagos–Ibadan Expressway

At least six people have been confirmed dead, while two others sustained serious injuries in a road accident at the NASFAT junction along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway.

The crash, which occurred at about 2:36 p.m. on Thursday, involved a Mazda commercial bus and a Volvo truck. The 18-seater bus, reportedly travelling from Lagos, ran into a truck coming from Ibadan that was attempting a U-turn near the NASFAT area.

The Public Relations Officer of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Ogun Sector Command, Afolabi Odunsi-Oyewole, confirmed the incident in Abeokuta, stating that a total of eight persons were involved in the accident.

Odunsi-Oyewole attributed the crash to excessive speeding and said FRSC personnel from the Mowe Unit and Ibafo Outpost, alongside an ambulance team from the Ojota Unit Command, officers from the MTD RCCG Police Division, and TRACE officials from Mowe Division, promptly responded to the scene.

He explained that before the arrival of emergency responders, some good Samaritans had already taken a number of the injured victims to an undisclosed hospital, while others were conveyed to Famobis Hospital in Lotto for treatment.

According to him, FRSC received a distress call at about 2:40 p.m. and rescue teams arrived at the scene approximately 10 minutes later.

“The crash involved two vehicles—a Mazda commercial bus and a Volvo truck. Eight people were involved, six lost their lives, and two sustained injuries. Overspeeding was identified as the cause of the accident,” he said.

The deceased were taken to a morgue, while injured victims are receiving medical care.

The FRSC Sector Commander in Ogun State, Corps Commander Akinwumi Fasakin, has ordered a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash.

The incident comes just days after Nigerian-British boxer Anthony Joshua was involved in a separate road accident that left him injured and claimed the lives of two of his friends. The FRSC had earlier noted that excessive speed and wrongful overtaking contributed to that crash.
